Vine Morris, William V&A Explore The Collections

On behalf of Morris & Co, he completed his first tapestry in 1879 - the Acanthus and Vine tapestry which Morris later nicknamed 'The Cabbage and Vine'. It was inspired by the Flemish verdure tapestries produced during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

William Morris designed Acanthus & Vine so that he might teach himself to weave. He had always loved tapestries and considered them to be a high art form. He set up a loom in his bedroom at Kelmscott House and worked on this every day, sometimes for ten hours at a stretch, from 10th of May to the 17th of September 1879.

Embroidery This was the first technique that the British textile designer adapted for commercial use. He carried out this technique before he was married. In his first attempts in stitching fabric, Morris was trying to make a version of the wall hangings from the Middle Ages that he had admired.
